Happy first of December everyone! With the coming cold and the holiday season coming up, this artist was a perfect pick for the December Artist of the Month! Please welcome Bonny Rooze as the newest Artist of the Month! Bonny is a talented fiber artist that makes super cute animals and piratical cleaning clothes. She also teaches our knitting classes! Be on the lookout for more of her classes coming up soon! Her love for this area runs deep! Bonny is a transplant from the northeast but that didn't stop her from growing new roots here. She's been calling North Carolina home for 23 years with her husband and two sons and loving every minute of it! A Little More About Bonny Bonny has been with us almost from the beginning and her work is really amazing. I know that we had her teddy bears just in time for Christmas last year; it seems fitting that around the mark of a year with us that she would be picked as Artist of the Month. (I promise I drew her name blindly! What happy coincidence!) She is a knitter that creates a wonderful range of textile items; from teddy bears to wash clothes and Christmas ornaments. Her work is wonderfully soft and durable! The material that she uses seems to be some of the best out there and she puts so much thought and effort into her work. You can really feel the love that's in every stitch! Our Interview with Bonny H: What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? B: I knew pretty early on that I wanted to work with fiber. But, my experience trying to learn to knit from my grandmother was not good for either of us. Fast forward many years, I moved to NC, no friends or family here, I took classes at NC State Craft Center mostly to meet people. The first class I took was lap weaving--very interesting but what hooked me (so to speak) was the next class: beginner knitting. I was off to the races from there. H: If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? B: I am energized by color and texture. I'd love to work with clay--really get my hands into it, make a piece with bumps and crevices, and then play with glazes to find beautiful hues and shakes to finish it. H: You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? B: I find inspiration in the fall palette of colors--if I'm a "new" color it'd be a combo of brown, deep red, pumpkin orange, bit of green and maybe just a flash of gold. Blends are gorgeous to me. H: What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"? B: I've been knitting for over 20 years. I've been selling my work on and off for over 10 years. Any insecurities I had about being good enough I sorted out within the first couple years of doing craft fairs. Positive feedback, studying what other fiber artists were doing and working, working, working helped with that. Nowadays I'm trying to figure out who my target customer base is and how to reach them. H: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? B: My favorite animal is the tiger. Such grace and fierceness. But I wouldn't describe myself as a tiger. I'm a bit scattered like a hummingbird, strong minded (my husband calls it stubborn) like a mule and completely devoted like a dog. What animal is that? Happy Monday everyone! Were you able to come out last Thursday night for the Chili Cook Off? We had a blast meeting new people and hearing about all the chili stories! This is a yearly event, so if you didn't make it this time, you have next year to come out too! We have so many classes happening this week and some other exciting things to be starting! Read on to find out more! Classes and Events Tuesday we will be hosting our Stained Glass Crash Course. (Click the class name for more information!) This is a four (4) night class that will be happening every Tuesday evening for four weeks. Students will learn the basics of Tiffany style stained glass fabrication including design, glass cutting, foiling, soldering, and patina application techniques. This Tuesday night will be the first class period for this course. We will also be having our Craft Night at Whiskey Sowers class Tuesday night. (Click the class name for more information!) We have a different and seasonal craft going on. Come join us for a fun night of crafting and sipping! Wednesday evening will be our Paint Night at Hyperion class. (Click the class name for more information!) This is your typical paint night class and will be working on the basics of acrylic painting. Friday we will be hosting our Craft After Work event! (Click the class name for more information!) This is one of our favorite events that we have. The goal of this event is for artists and art lovers to come together to learn together! We know that everyone is super busy during this time of year and on the lookout for that PERFECT gift (and sometimes just ANY gift for that one person that is super hard to buy for). So, starting this coming week, we will be open every Sundays so that you can get all of your holiday shopping done! We will be open starting on Sunday, November 17th through Sunday, December 22nd from noon to 5 p.m. Come on in to find that special something for that special someone! Christmas Drawing! Happy first week of November! While we're a little sad that it's no longer Halloween season, this is still one of our favorite seasons. Fall is really beautiful and we are excited about not having to worry about burning up to do outside activities! (We feel you other pale ones!) We have a new section coming to these blog posts! Classes and Events: Thursday night we will be open extended hours for First Thursday in Downtown Mebane! This Thursday's theme is a Chili Cook Off. Just a little friendly competition between the businesses downtown. Come visit and try the Chili and vote on which one is the best! Make sure to drop by our shop and try our Chili too! Happy November everyone! It's the first of the month, so you know what that means. We are announcing our Artist of the Month for November! Please welcome in Marty Highfield as the newest Artist of the Month! We cannot say enough nice things about Marty. She is a hardworking lady, a mother, and somehow squeezes in time to make wonderful creations for the store. She has a soft spirit that you can't help but be calmed around. Seriously, she is a really wonderful human. We hope that with this post, you will come to know her a little more and really appreciate her work. A Little More About Marty Marty sews pillows, door stops, and small plush owls for us. The small owls are so cute! She also has been creating ink drawings and recently started selling her prints in the shop. Marty is so sweet, kind, and totally on top of everything. If anything news comes out, she's normally the first to respond or come by the store with something new for us. So we are so happy that her name was pulled for the November Artist of the Month! Our Interview with Marty H: What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? M: My mom taught me to sew when I was younger. I made different things over the years like pillows, bags, quilts and I went to college for textile design. I have always enjoyed fabrics and the fun ways to use them. Then also in high school I had an awesome art teacher who gave me the art basics for drawing.  I have a friend recently help me make the leap into Pen and Ink. H: If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? M: I think I would love to do sculptures in clay or metal or woodworking. I have always appreciated the creativity of those art forms but just never had the opportunity to really explore them. H: You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? M: I would be a soft sage-y green with just the hint of blue: because that is the most soothing, calming colors to me. H: What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"? M: Sometimes I post it online and really appreciate the feedback. Having people commission artwork or buy the things from the store is always a great boost too. H: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? M: I would be a horse, because they are the most beautiful, graceful, inspiring animal to me. Ever since I was a little girl I have loved them and wish I could be around them more. What You Can Look Forward To Marty has been really awesome with working with us to bring you the best deal possible. After our conversation, we decided the best option would be to add her items to our Rewards Program. If you buy any of Marty's items in the store, you will get an extra Rewards Program Stamp! Hello everyone! Happy Monday! We are so excited for this week! Well, specifically the end of the week. Halloween is happening this week! What is something fun or a family tradition you and your family have for Halloween? We give our candy, make pumpkin seed's from a recipe David's mom gave him, watch scary movies and (once all the kids go home) we go out to a haunted forest with Heather and the other David! This is why we are so excited about Halloween, other than we just like this holiday, and why we want to know what you do! Check out what we've got going on this week! Classes and Events Monday (Tonight!) we will be having our Cocktail and Craft event over at Dick and Jane's. Learn the basics of jewelry fabrication from Kat while sipping some handmade drinks. This class is so much fun, even for those who have no idea how to make jewelry! You'll get to walk away with a couple pieces and maybe even a new found skill! Join us from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Artist of the Month On Friday (November first) we will be announcing the Artist of the Month for November. That means this is the last week to learn more about Sam and her work while taking advantage of her discounted prices! Samantha Scott is a multi-talented artist that works in a wide range of mediums; focusing mostly on clay sculpting and paintings. With all that knowledge she teaches some of the courses we offer at the store. Be on the lookout for some of her classes to learn some of her expertise.
