  • August Artist of the Month: Cullen Cornett!

Something Else That's New for Impulsive! We have been wanting to do something special for our artists since we first opened the shop in October of 2018. Thank you for being patient as we've been acclimating ourselves to this new adventure with all of you! Finally, we are finally ready to kick off our "Artist of the Month" program! Every month we will be featuring a new artist from all of the amazingly talented people that have trusted us with their wonderful works of art. In the posts, we will be telling you a little more about them, we will have an interview section, and then what you can expect from this month regarding their artwork. Be on the look out for special deals and other awesome things for you! The reason why we wanted to get this going is to connect our artist to our community. If you come into the shop, you're not going to get many chances to meet some of the amazing people behind your favorite items. So this is our way of making that happen! We hope you like this new addition to our blog story! Now, onto our artist for this month! A Little Bit About Cullen Cullen is a native of Chapel Hill, NC. She studies art from a very young age through college. Cullen has an English degree and works as an office administrator at University Baptist Church, Chapel Hill. She is extremely passionate about all things creative! Besides watercolor, she draws, sews, crafts, and does home decor projects. Cullen lives in Chapel Hill with her husband, Steven, and their four "children" - 3 cats and a pit mix. Be sure to check out her items in the store and here on the website! Our Interview with Cullen! H:What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? C:I studied art all through my school and college years, and have always been a creative person, but I think I became an "artist" when I started selling my work at New Hope Market in Chapel Hill. That was the start of my business, and it has flourished, with it's bumps in the road, ever since! H:If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? C:I have a huge passion for interior and graphic design- I love the idea of being an interior decorator! I'm always doing DIY and decorating projects in my house, much to the chagrin of my husband, who says,"I can never find anything after you organize!" H:You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? C:As a new crayon, I would be "Robin's Egg Blue." I absolutely love the shade of blue on baby robin eggs- my colleague has a nest in his yard and sends me pictures of the eggs. It is such a light, airy, greenish-blue, one that only nature could produce! H:What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"?  C:I definitely deal with the negative voice in my head when I'm painting- not feeling good enough, or that anyone would buy your work is one of the biggest issues most artists face, and it holds us back. I say ignore that voice and go for it! The only way I've battled this issue is to just keep painting, keep making beautiful art, and the more people love it and ask for it, the quieter those voices get. Another trick is to step back for a few days from the piece you're unhappy with, and go back to it with fresh eyes. Sometimes a perspective change is all we need. H:If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? C:I am a huge cat lover, and have always considered myself a cat at heart- partly because I love to take naps in winter sunlight, and partly because I'm introverted and independent. What You Can Look Forward To! During the month of August, Cullen is giving you an awesome deal! If you buy 2 packs of her cards (there are 4 cards in each pack) you get them for the price of $8. You can use her cards for any occasion because of how beautiful they are and because they are blank inside. Make your special events personal with all the different designs she has painted! Want one of her prints? She is giving an extra stamp for our rewards card if you get one of her prints! (It does not have to be worth $25 to get the extra stamp; it does have to be an item from the artist that does not already have a deal on it). That means you'll be able to fill your rewards card faster to get that amazing discount at the end! Just make sure to present your card to one of us at the counter! Don't have a card yet? Come by the store to pick up yours today! Have a question or comment? Let's get social! We have a Facebook page, Instagram account, the website, and an email address. Let us know your thoughts! You are important to us (we wouldn't be here without you!) and so is your feedback! Try to get in contact with us today. XOXO - Impulsive Creativity

  • Impulsive Adventure to Emerald Hallow Mine (Hiddenite)

"Life is pure adventure, and the sooner we realize that, the quicker we will be able to treat life as art." - Maya Angelou . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I'm actually kicking myself, as I'm writing this out, for not taking more pictures from this excursion! Seriously, it was absolutely stunning place to be and we were having the time of our lives! Let's just chalk it up to being so excited and absorbed in what we were doing that I forgot. I promise that I will take more pictures for the next post. Anyway, onto the post for today! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hello everyone! Welcome to our first, official, Impulsive Adventure! We were able to squeak out for Memorial Day 2019 to have a day full of friendship and inspiration; to recharge our creative process, so to speak. What a wonderful place to have kick off our very first Impulsive Adventure. Digging and Sifting I'm fully convinced that part of the creative process is to get out into nature and really dig in deep (literally). There's something about connecting with a beautiful scenery or just playing in the dirt that is relaxing and helps to reset the mind for a more creative outlook. Personally, I've always found it easier to paint when outside or after a trip of being in nature. This trip was no exception. While the red clay was flying, so were our spirits. We thoroughly enjoyed excavating, searching for our very own buried treasure, and learning what to look for and the best way to find the precious stones. David M. was able to find a fairly big crystal formation and Kathryn was able to find several smaller gems that looked to either be Garnet or maybe even Ruby! David L. and I found a whole lot of Quarts crystals. We dug to our hearts content and then took our buckets full of dirt and findings to the sluice to sift through everything (the guys were nice enough to tote the super heavy buckets back for us!) Sifting quickly became one of our favorite things to do, so we decided to try our luck with some of the pre-seeded buckets. Kathryn and David M. found so many amazing specimens that way! I even found an actual Ruby in the bucket I was sharing with David L. You'll even be seeing some of what we found in the store soon! That's really the reason that we went to Hiddenite; it was something really fun to do and to bring you some of the best product that we can possible get! The Yellow Deli Once we realized that we were hungry and how late it had gotten (I told you we were having fun!), we drove into town and saw this cute little place. It seemed to be calling to our artistic spirit; whispering that this is exactly where you need to stop and rest. How could we say no? We just HAD to go in and experience what this place was like. As soon as you walk through the door, it felt so comforting. That feeling might have a little bit to do with the amazing smells of everything baking. There was natural light coming from everywhere. But the best thing was that everything had some kind of artistic something to it: the lamp shades had positive words stenciled on them, there were murals everywhere, flower arrangements of all shapes and kinds, there were flowers painted on the steps leading to the cafe area, everything was brick or wood or leather. It was just amazing. We wish ya'll could have been there to see everything. Not only was the decor spot on, but the food was really awesome! I'm not sure if it was just because we were starving or not. Whatever the reason, it didn't last long! (To be honest, I really think it was both.) From the looks of the menu, the people behind the Yellow Deli are really trying to keep things as wonderful as possible for anyone who walks through the door. I noticed several options for vegetarians and noticed that they had organic sodas. I'm not sure about all the food restrictions/allergies, but I get the feeling that they really try and that they care about the well being of those who do have a harder time with food. Personally, I can highly recommend the Blueberry and Walnut muffin and the Deli Rose sandwich (both pictured) as extremely good and well worth the visit to get. After we finished with our dinner, we explored the store that is attached to the Yellow Deli. There were a whole spectrum of things you could buy: from bakery items to furniture! There was spices and candles and mosaic tables. Seriously, there was a little bit of everything! While we didn't get a whole lot of pictures of that area (we were really tired and very full by then) it really got us thinking as to what we want Impulsive Creativity to look and feel like. We discussed how cute the whole place was, how comfortable it felt, and some ideas to help the store to start feeling that way too. The Take Away While our main goal in going to Emerald Hollow was to collect new and unique specimens (for you!) to offer in our store, we were pleasantly surprised by the inspiration the Yellow Deli gave to us. Going forward, you may see some changes to the store. Hopefully you like them! We're trying to make Impulsive Creativity like an art haven, where people can feel comfortable and connect with others in a way that only art can do. We love our space and what we do so much and hope that you can feel that. We would love to hear from you! What constructive ideas do you have to offer about Impulsive Creativity? Is there anything you would change? What would you like to see more of? Your input matters to us; you're the reason we're even here today! Leave us a comment or send us an email!
