We are so excited to announce October's Artist of the Month! Samantha Scott is a talented artist and someone we really love to work with. She has been one of the few artists to be at the store since it first opened and we love to have her here! Inside and outside the store, she has been our friend and we are so happy to be able to introduce her to you! A Little About Sam Samantha is a potter and a painter. Mostly working in clay and acrylic painting with some watercolor to spice things up! Outside of her artwork, she loves to go to her husband's shows for his band, hanging out with her three sons, and spending time with her best friend, her mom! Sam teaches our pottery and drawing classes here at the shop and loves to share all the artistic knowledge that she's been about to gain to her students. You may even see her working behind the counter every now and then! Our Interview with Sam H: What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? S; Since I was six years old, every time I’d tell my Mom that I was bored she would just hand me art supplies. H: If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? S: If I could work in a different area it would be welding metals. Except I’m a wuss and I know I’d hurt myself. H: You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? S: I would be a marbled black and green crayon. I’d probably call it blackish green because I’m horrible at naming things. I just like it because it would probably look cool. H: What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"? S: I don’t really have thoughts like that. I figure if no one likes it, that I do and I’ll just stick it in my house lol. H: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? S: I’d be a White Barn Owl. They are beautiful and majestic. And who doesn’t want to be majestic? What You Can Look Forward To Some of Sam's original paintings are discounted just for you! Sam does not offer any prints of her work at the shop, so once these amazing pieces are gone, they really are gone. That makes her work even more special. We are so excited to be introducing September Artist of the Month! From day one, we have been laughing over these wonderfully cute and "punny" items. They really fit in with our personal styles and the overall style of our store. We love anything that's just a little off from normal around here! A Little Bit About SKP Ink Sarah and Drew created SKP Ink in 2018. Their motto? "Bad Jokes by Good People" and to be honest, they really live up to be some really amazing people. This husband and wife duo are the powerhouse behind SKP Ink. Their work is handmade from start to finish; drawn by Sarah, coasters made by Drew, hand sealed, hand cut, hand folded, everything! They create everything in their home, " more of a factory than a living room"! From cards to coasters, magnets and button pins, they have a little something for everyone. Oh, and the "SKP" is Sarah's initials! Nice way to bring it all the way around to the beginning. Our Interview with SKP Ink H: What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? S: My partner in crime, love, life and business encouraged me to start drawing again after years of not drawing anything. At first, it was just a fun, relaxing hobby for me. Somewhere along the way I began to decorate our kitchen with cute drawings paired with punny sayings. We had a friend's birthday come up soon after and decided to turn one into a card and our whole business has snowballed from there. H: If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? S: I would have to say music. Drew spent years playing and touring in several bands and we've dabbled in that in recent years as well. I've done some t-shirt designs and album art for his bands and it's a fun way to step out of my comfort zone and support him in his passion. H: You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? S: Noir is the new Black. Our motto is Bad Jokes by Good People and we both have a dark sense of humor. Plus, our favorite color is black, aka noir. H: What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"? S: Definitely had a case of this when I first began but I had a lot of encouragement and support from my partner, friends and family. In recent years I've really tried to just go for it and be open to what comes and think that it has brought SKP ink to where it is today. Putting your art into the world is a very vulnerable thing to do but it is such a freeing and amazing feeling seeing strangers enjoy it! H: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? S: Honestly I couldn't figure out a good answer for this one so I took an online spirit animal quiz and it actually seemed to nail me. The internet says I'm a deer! Their reasoning: "When you have the deer as spirit animal, you are highly sensitive and have a strong intuition. By affinity with this animal, you have the power to deal with challenges with grace. You master the art of being both determined and gentle in your approach." What You Can Look Forward To! Happy Monday everyone! Last week, we asked for your opinion on having blog posts in between everything else that focused specifically on art related topics. We got 100% YES vote across all our social media polls about it! We are so excited to hear back from you and to bring you these new posts! We're going to start sprinkling in posts during the week about other art related information. Now that we have gotten your feedback, we will start making this a thing! You'll have to be a little patient with us as we need to do some research and get the writing done for this new adventure! Thank you guys for being awesome and giving us some great thoughts! Question Monday We know we asked a question last week, but we wanted to ask one more. What are your thoughts about Twitter? Would it be good or something you would want for the store to have an account? Let us know your thoughts! We will be putting up a Facebook post later today if you would like to vote there, there will also be a poll in our Instagram stories, or look out for the section below called, "Let's Get Social!" to let us know your thoughts. So, here's what's going on this week at Impulsive. Classes and Events: Monday we will be having a Cocktail and Craft at Dick and Jane's Matini and Tapas in Mebane, NC. This one day course will teach students basic jewelry fabrication. Students will make one necklace and one bracelet or one pair of earrings while enjoying lovely, handcrafted drinks and appetizers. Join us from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include all materials. Drinks and appetizers are ordered separately. Wednesday evening we will be having Stained Glass Crash Coarse at our shop! This will be the last installment of this four (4) night class. Students will learn the basics of Tiffany style stained glass fabrication including design, glass cutting, foiling, soldering, and patina application techniques. Tickets are $65 plus a $25 materials fee. Students will leave with one finished stained glass panel of their own design. Due to the intense nature of this course, participants MUST be at least 15 years of age. This class is scheduled for 6 - 8 p.m. at 107 W Clay St. Mebane, NC 27302. Sorry you messed it? We will have another one coming up in the next few months. Make sure to look our for it! Class Schedule Moving Forward We are now getting into the show season for artists. This means that our artists (and us as a store) are going to be participating in more local art shows! This is a really exciting season for us and we would love for you to come out and show your support of all our artists and the art community that we've been building over the last year. While we are thrilled about doing more shows, it does mean that we are going to be offering a few less classes in the next few months. Our artists are going to be very busy getting items ready for the coming holidays and art shows. Because of how busy this time of year is, we (the collective of Impulsive Creativity) will have less time to devote to teaching classes during this time. We will still be offering art classes at the store and our one-day classes at other local shops. You may just notice that we will not be offering as many in the coming months. At the start of the new year, we will go back to our normal class schedule. We thank you for your understanding and support of the arts outside of class time. Last Week For August Artist of the Month! Been thinking about our artist this month, but haven't gotten to the store yet? This is the last week to buy Cullen's artwork with a reward attached! Happy Monday everyone! Just a question, what are some blog post topics you would like to hear about? We've had a couple of posts dedicated to a certain event or something that we've done. Would you like more content about art related things? Is there something specific about art you would like to know about? Or something else? Let us know! You know how much we love your input at this point! We will still be putting the "Need to Know"s out every week; just thinking about adding some other posts in between these and the Artist of the Month posts. There will be links below if you have anything you want to share! Anyway, onward to this week's need to know at Impulsive! Classes and Events: Wednesday evening we will be having Stained Glass Crash Coarse at our shop! This will be the third installment of this four (4) night class. Sorry you messed it? We will have another one coming up in the next few months. Make sure to look our for it! Students will learn the basics of Tiffany style stained glass fabrication including design, glass cutting, foiling, soldering, and patina application techniques. Tickets are $65 plus a $25 materials fee. Students will leave with one finished stained glass panel of their own design. Due to the intense nature of this course, participants MUST be at least 15 years of age. This class is scheduled for 6 - 8 p.m. at 107 W Clay St. Mebane, NC 27302. Thursday Kathryn will be at Durham Night Market Thursday! If you live in the Triangle (or close by) and would like to come out to support local art and music; this is the place to do it! The event is from 5:30-10:30 p.m. and the address is 306 Parham St, Raleigh, NC 2760. Need more information? Here's a link to there website. Friday we will be hosting our Craft After Work event. Bring your projects! This is a FREE local artist meet-up at Impulsive Creativity! Meet other local artists and discuss all things crafts. This event only happens once a month, so make sure to come on by for this months gathering! Artist of the Month Cullen Cornett is the wonderful artist for this month! She specializes in watercolor painting and you can see that in her work. Her artwork is influenced by her love of animals and nature. You can feel her passion in everything she paints. All her prints and cards have a special deal on them, just for you! Come by the store today to learn more about the rewards!
