  • Impulsive Adventure: Renovation of the Store!

"Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous in the end." - Robin Sharma Our Ideas We had been talking about making changes to the store space not long after actually getting moved in. Giving Impulsive Creativity an actual place to live was our first priority. Following that, was actually giving Impulsive a place to call home. Impulsive as a business has always been a home to all the lovely local artists that have put their works of art inside. Now it was time to make this space more art friendly. More about displaying that art to the best of our ability. More about being a peaceful place to feel at home in, not just buy art from. New Year. New Store. We started 2020 with this mantra. A code that has guided all the decisions and movements to make this a space for makers and crafters. To keep us moving ever forward and pushing us to be better ever single day. So we made a checklist of things that we wanted to update, and slowly checked them off! Some of those things were the floor, painting the drywall something other than beige, and installing lighting in the cabinets. As we continue in this journey, we will be adding to these improvements. Constantly tinkering seems to be the artist way anyways! We are so excited for what the future holds! Keep reading if you want to know our thought processes and how we actually got everything done in just two short weeks! From Start to Finish Going into this project, we knew we had a short deadline and that we needed to make the most of all that time we had. Over the weekend, Kat and her husband, David M., were able to move anything upstairs that we thought may get ruined and to start moving the rest of the items around so that we could get started on the painting. We came in on Monday morning ready to get things done! Our goal was to get all of the wall colors finished before moving on to the other tasks. Knocking out all the painting in just three days, we were able to get two complete coats on the stairs, painted the classroom area with two coats of white, all areas that ended up being green, and then one coat of all the blue paint. While Kat and Heather were working on the painting, David M. was working on the lighting under the cabinets. He had gotten rolls of LED lighting strips, then had to solder the strips together so that they would run along the tops of the shelves, and drill the wholes so that they could seamlessly go all the way across. It took him closer to a week to assemble and then install everything. We are so proud of all the hard work he put into this project and so happy with how it all turned out! (Don't try this at home, kids! David M. is an IT expert and does the stained glass pieces in the store. He knows how to do this, otherwise we would have contacted help.) After the wall painting was done, we were able to start moving the rest of the art items, that were not moved upstairs, carefully around to start painting the floors. We had to go over the floors twice to completely seal all the old, stick on tile that was down. With the floors taking 24 hours to dry, this was the most time consuming part. We had to rush to get everything painted and then wait for it to dry. You know about watching paint dry...We had to find other things to do without getting footprints everywhere! This was the time that we installed the new counter top to be painted later, got supplies for the next couple of projects, and moved more items so that we could get to the next area. We were hitting the weekend at this point. Kat was able to pour paint the counter top and start really working on the new dressing room during this time. The start of the second week, we were really starting to drag. Having the brunt of the renovations on just Heather and Kat was starting to take an energy toll. Coming in Monday morning, we knew that budgeting our time this week would be the most important thing. We would need all of our energy to actually finish everything. We were able to completely finish the floors by Wednesday of the second week. That's when we decided to finish painting the base of the front counter, get the built ins actually built so that we could hang the art pieces on something more dependable than the brick, move all the movable cabinets into place, and put all the artwork back to it's home. Normally, moving everything back would not have been as huge of a task as it was. But we were tired and running on fumes by this point. Both David M. and, Heather's husband, David L. helped after getting off work in the evenings of these days to help us put things back to where they go in the mad dash that was being able to have a put together store on Saturday. Finally we got everything in place late Friday night so that we could open our doors, right on time, Saturday morning. We would not have been able to get all of this done without the help of our husbands, a few of our artists that volunteered to help us out, and all the people following us and giving us support! Check out our Facebook feed for a more in depth view of what was happening during those two weeks! The Take Away This renovation taught us so much about digging deep to get things done. It solidified the working friendship between Kat and Heather to be even stronger than it was before. Teaching us that we can and we will kick booty together! It was as empowering as it was exhausting. The Impulsive Team is so happy with the results and also happy that it's over. Would we do it all again? Absolutely! Hopefully with all the knowledge and skill that we gained so that we could do it faster the second time! If you follow us at all, or even if you're thinking about it, we want to thank you for this experience! Without all of our followers, friends, artists, and families giving us so much encouragement we really won't have been able to do this. Any of this. We are so grateful to all of you that have stuck through this journey with us. Impulsive Creativity wouldn't even have a space to call home without you. Thank you! We encourage you to come by and see all the improvements we've made if you haven't already! Get connected with us and let us know what we did well and what things you would like to see from us in the future! XOXO - Impulsive

  • February Artist of the Month: BlunderStumble

We are so excited to introduce this month's artist! Or should we say, artists! This couple has been with us a couple months and we are so impressed with their skills in their respective art mediums! Working as a team both in life and in the studio is nothing to sneeze at! Lots of couples have a hard time balancing life and being business partners. But these two make it look easy! It's also really cool that we randomly drew a couple for Valentine's Day this month! Let's get to know a little more about them! A Little More About These Artists Welcome Jamie and Brian to this month's Artist of the Month! This power couple brings their different mediums together to help to grow stronger together as artists! One does metal sculptures (Brian), and the other does pour paintings (Jamie). At first glance, these mediums don't have many similarities, but in reality the way you work with them is similar! For both, you have to get them to a state where they flow easier so that you can work with them better. For pour painting, you add things to acrylic paint so that they can flow across the canvas to make stunning and completely unique patterns. Then for metalworking, you need to super heat a metal to connect all the other pieces to create the piece of art you want it to be. You have to get both mediums "melty" to get them to create wondrous works of art. Get to know this couple and they will melt your heart just like with their work! Our Interview with BlunderStumble H: What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? J: There was a terrible storm raging outside and I was confined to my house for a few days. I was bored, so I started experimenting with paint. I felt the need for bright vibrantĀ colors since it was grey and disgusting outside. I had heard of the idea of acrylic paint pouring and, realizing I had the right materials, I just started mixing. B: I don't think I ever had a "key moment" getting started.Ā  I've always loved watching videos on welding and metalworking. Slowly but surely I starting trying things on my own.Ā  I finally realized this hobby was possible when I built my own foundry. H: If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? J: Colored epoxy woodworking. My daddy is a woodworker and I have always loved helping and watching him in his shop. Natural wood is my favorite medium but I unfortunately do not have the space, tools, or time to do woodwork. The marriage of colored epoxy and natural grain wood is so beautiful to me. I love to see how the color accentuates the imperfections and intricacies of the natural wood. B: Digital media.Ā  I would love to be able to design concepts digitally and then create them. H: You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? J: Belizean Blue. We went to Belize on vacation and I was astounded by the gorgeous color of the ocean water. It was the clearest, most robust blue I have ever seen and I just wanted to be in it. B: Rust. Not a plain brown. A real rust. A blistering multi-shade brown that adds contrastĀ but inevitably destroys the piece. H: What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"? J: Well, I think I have pretty good taste in design and balance. If I don't like something I've made, I usually paint over it. I make my art because it brings me joy. If I love it, I know that it is a joyous piece, and if it happens to speak to someone else, I welcome them to take it home and enjoy it to. B: I don't think about it. I started making these pieces for fun and that's why I continue to do it.Ā  Ā If people appreciate them, great; if not, oh well. H: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? J: I would most definitely be a sea otter. They are sea and land animals and they love to eat seafood. As an ocean baby, I greatly identify with them. I amĀ envious that they can float in the ocean for hours and they are such extremely agile swimmers. I would love to be able to exist in the ocean in such a beautiful way. B: Hermit crab. Don't feel like dealing with the world today? Cool, I'll be in my shell. What You Can Look Forward To! These two are offering a couple awesome options of discounts just for you! Here's the list of options you have this month for their artwork! $15 off your $100+ purchase of BlunderStumble products (Jami's and Brian's) $45 off your $300+Ā purchase of BlunderStumble products (Jami's and Brian's) Purchases can be from one or both artists and the $100 or $300 is the total purchase price. This is really a great deal on their artwork! They do a fantastic job and are just being really wonderful people by giving you this discount. Their work is really worth every penny. Let's Get Social Do you have a question or an idea? Let us know! Leave a commit below, sign up for our email list, or follow us on Social Media! Here's a link to our Facebook page! • Valentine's Day Guide to Presents Your S.O. Will Really LovešŸ’•

Chocolate + flowers + fancy dinner + a movie = Valentine's Day. That's typically the Valentine's Day equation, am I right? We seem to be in a Valentine's Day rut. Not to mention...what do we get for the guys?! (Right ladies?!) A lot of us are lost on what to do for our significant other on the one day of the year that we could really spoil them and show them just how much they mean to us. Why does gift giving have to be so hard in the first place??? The beauty of this is, gift giving is actually really simple. We're just overthinking all of this! Then it comes down to the day, and we're left empty handed for all the thought we put into it. But you don't want to leave your significant other with a gift they won't use, or worse, tries to return for something else that they actually like! Yikes! It all starts with thoughtful and intentional gift giving. Here are a few things to consider that will help you to pick out the perfect gift that they will love! 1. What are their hobbies? Fishing, golfing, shopping, video games, hiking, woodworking, painting, cooking, etc. They've talked about their favorite things enough by now (or shown how they spend their time) for you to know some of the things they really love to do. This is a great time to get involved a little! Having some shared interests is nice. At the very least, you'll finally understand some of what they're talking about. Have them teach you a new skill, spend some time together, and then switch! Now it's your turn to teach them some of your favorite things! You know what they love! Pick something they love and marry it with something you love! Which leads us to number 2. 2. Can you give them a memory? Below are a few ideas that you can try or to get your mind working for something that the two of you can do together! Video game and spa night -- Actually, this is a favorite date night for my husband and me. Like I was saying before, sometimes you just marry the two things you love together. He loves video games and I love a good spa night. It was an awesome idea! We try to play a two-person game and work together to get through a couple of bosses. Then I take over with soaking our feet, general nail treatments, and teaching him how to paint my nails. Surprisingly enough he loves the spa time too! We both feel loved, pampered, and connected while learning a new skill! (For the nail painting he said, "Just in case we have a little girl and she asks me to paint her nails for her" šŸ˜) P.S. If you're a guy reading this, and this makes you feel a little uncomfortable, I promise you that your gal will be so happy to teach you how to take better care of yourself. We love to do that anyway! It doesn't make you any less manly. We know you can beat up anybody. Now you can do it with healthy nails! Creative night. Make something together! It builds teamwork and you come out with something wonderful at the end! You can look up DIY videos of YouTube or even whole classes to watch! Bob Ross painting can be really fun together! Hang it up or take pictures to remember this fun night! Speaking of! Take a class together. It helps if you're both new at whatever you're trying. There will probably be one that is a little more gifted than the other. Just remember it's not a competition to see who's best at something, it's about spending time with the other person. Cheer each other on! Try food that neither of you have had before --if you like to cook, make it a thing! If not, search for new food near where you live! The selection may surprise you! Breakfast in Bed (for both of you!) -- Make a lovely breakfast together, grab a tray, and then go back to bed to enjoy it together! Play with the times of day, dates don't have to be at night only! Actually do the things in the movies (instead of watching them!) -- being cliche isn't always a bad thing! Do all those really cute, couple things in the movies that you would have gone to see instead of going to see yet another chick-flick! Weekend getaway (or stay-cation!) -- Valentine's day is on a Friday this year! That means that you can plan something beyond the Valentine's Date Night and go on a Trip. Get that AirBnB and go! Or stay home for a whole weekend! Having a weekend dedicated to you and your S.O. is so nice and getting away from "normal" life for a bit is really good for your mental health! 3. Can you make something? Are you crafty? Or can you follow simple directions that you found online for something? Great! Make your own, unique present! Look up a video to follow. Make that card! Whatever project you have in mind, they will absolutely love that you took the time and effort to make them something. The best part? It doesn't have to be perfect! Don't explain away the imperfects of the finished product. Love is just two imperfect people coming together to celebrate life together! This one kind of plays off #2. The great thing about this list is that you can mix and match to make your own special night! 4. If you really don't have the time to make something yourself, buy local! Not only are you buying something that someone "DIY"ed themselves, but you're giving them a Valentine's Day present as well! The cherry on top is that NO ONE ELSE will have that gift you are giving them! Buying locally means that each piece was crafted individually and each one is completely different from the other! You also have someone who truly wants you to be happy with whatever products you choose. Whether it's a wreath for your front door, a spa kit (that they will be more than happy to help you pick out), signs, artwork, jewelry, and everything else in between. (All of the above items are made by local artists near Mebane, NC and for sale right now!) Especially those working at Impulsive Creativity šŸ˜ Couldn't resist the shameless plug here lol! It's all true though. We would much rather see you happy than picking something that isn't right for you and your significant other. We love to support our local community AND our local art community! You take all the stress out of getting something unique for your S.O. and then keep the chain going by allowing that creator to get something special for their S.O. Win-win! P.S. If you need to put in a custom order for any of our artists at the store, please let us know soon! We want to make sure you get exactly what you want on the exact day you need it. No more looking like you forget this year...again! 5. Mix and Match Try some of these ideas all together! Maybe you still like the dinner and a movie with flowers, so you make your own flowers. Perhaps you do the getaway with all the normal chick-flick things in them. Why not make a dinner that you both haven't tried, make an indoor picnic in front of the fireplace and play board games. • January Artist of the Month: Kathryn Mathias

The day has come. We actually randomly pulled out one of our names! This is actually really nice timing because it's a new year now and with the renovations we have planned later on this month, it would be a little unfair to do one of the other artists with the shortened time. For those of you who do not know, Kathryn is the owner and founder of Impulsive Creativity! Keep reading to find out more about Kathryn and Impulsive Creativity! A Little More About Kathryn Kathryn Mathias is the owner of Impulsive Creativity! Without her, none of this would exist today! She started working on her craft in college as a way to have pretty, shiny things without breaking the bank. From there, she just fell in love with the art of chainmaille and working with local, natural stones. Having been born and raised in Mebane, NC her heart has always been drawn to this local art community; trying to support it however she can. She first started showcasing her work at local festivals and shows, quickly realizing that her real dream was to open up her own store one day. That dream finally happened in October 2018! Since opening the storefront, Impulsive Creativity has had over 80 artists (as far as today) say they would like to join us in bolstering the art community in Mebane, NC. With a focus on artists just starting their craft, or just starting to sell their work, we encourage artists in the local area to reach higher towards their dreams and provide a wonderful place for art lovers to support their own art community. Kathryn is one of the most hardworking people I know; she has a full-time job on top of owning her own business. She is also one of the most caring people I know. It's the whole reason she started Impulsive as we know it today, to help other artists that are having a hard time breaking into the art world. Our Interview with Kathryn H: What was the "key moment" for you that lead to you getting started in your medium? K: I've always enjoyed jewelry and other "shiny" things. I'd started creating gemstone jewelry in 2010 when I was bored in college. My sister took a chainmaille class and showed me how to make a box chain bracelet. From there, I was hooked and found supportive hobby communities online and never looked back H: If you could work in any other area of art (besides your own), what would it be and why? K: I hope I can own a BnB with a small bakery attached one day. I'm sure art will still be a part of my life for the rest of forever ā¤ H: You're a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? K: Probably glitter dark red because I'm either supper moody or all glitter sunshine. Mostly moody H: What is your go-to strategy for overcoming the thoughts of "your work isn't good enough" or "I am not good enough to sell my work"? K: I make thinks that I would wear and I like. If other people like it, awesome. If not I get cool jewelry. It's a win win. H: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? K: I would be a cat for obvious reasons. What You Can Look Forward To For the two weeks that we will be open in January, Kathryn is offering two amazing offers! Just for you!
